Problem

Apple's hardware is expensive and difficult to upgrade, you usually have to buy a new machine every few years.

Solution

With Apple's move to Intel-based systems and EFI emulation, you can essentially build an Apple computer from off-the-shelf parts. But I wanted it to look and feel like a Mac too. Using an old G5 case (for aesthetics) I have been able to keep a modern desktop Apple in use for about 10+ years now just updating components as I go - to this day it is the same spec as the brand new 2019! (yeah, that is not a typo, 2019!)

Hackintosh desktop setup

I usually keep the desktop G5 Mac case on the ground, but for illustration purposes: to an untrained eye they may not think twice that this is not an actual Mac setup.

As you can see this is a standard ATX board. I needed to build my own G5 to ATX adaptor plate - by far the most difficult part of the build, but now future-proof for any updates (I have already upgraded the motherboard 3 times). All the components keep very cool. I even have an Airport Extreme wifi/bluetooth card installed so I can airdrop files to my laptop, and do App handoff from my iPhone. How is this not a Mac!?

Illustration Mode

Wacom Cintiq setup for illustration

The coffee is the key part. When I am doing illustration with my Wacom Cintiq 13HD I can quickly plug it in and get drawing.
