3D printing
Role
Designer, 3D modeler
Problem
Sometimes you need one-off little parts that they just don't sell
Solution
3D print it! Thingiverse has a big selection of all sorts of neat things parts. I wanted to add my own to the database for others to use. Here I make a change holder instead of a commonly broken part on my Audi A6 (Bilford).
CUP-HOLDER REPLACEMENT Process
AUDI B5/C5 A4/A6/ALLROAD cup-holder
When I acquired Bilford, my Audi A6 Avant the lower cup holder was busted apart, and I tossed it immediately. As I have talked to other Audi owners of similar cars, it seems every single one has a broken cup holder. Despising the hole in my console I wanted a little slot there to put change, dog treats, etc. I think a small cubby in that location would be nice.. not finding anything to fit I decided to create my own.

Solidworks design
Taking from the Google sketchup design, I rebuilt the file into Solidworks. From there I fed into ReplicatorG to work with the Makerbot.

Makerbot in action
1st iteration
Printed First Draft. The Makerbot made the corners thick even though the 3D model did not specify this design, and the bottom was a little too thin – it tried but it needs a few modifications. Cleaning the printer heads may assist with printing round two. But I sanded and glued wood to complete and measure/install prototype

Second draft
2nd iteration
A little thicker, better rounded edges to match pitch of plastic on the console. As well as some indents to hold the tray in place:

Third draft
3rd iteration, showing progression of iterations (right to left)
Now that the models functionally work there will be more to come and iterate through such as usb ports, custom designs, etc. I Will be releasing the design to thingiverse in the near future so more can replace their cup-holders.

The rings
Final “flair” tray. May look familiar to the audi rings.. keeps quarters really secure as well, and good grip with a plasti-dip coating.
