Problem
Furniture is expensive, and seems pretty simple
Solution
Build some simple furniture pieces around the house, focusing on functionality vs. the most beautiful (but will get closer with more practice!)
The headboard thesis
Do you need a headboard? I don't think I could live without one now
Having a headboard seemed like a grownup thing to do. But I found out they want a lot of money for these things! So I set out to build my own. This my take at, what I thought, to be a very simple job that was not too bad... but definitely not as easy as anticipated.
The comparison on the right... and price comparison ($2,578)! Holy crap these are expensive! Built mine for < $40.

I don't think I could live without a headboard now
In the end it was as simple as a few common and inexpensive items that can be found at Lowes and Joanne Fabric:
- 1 4'x8' standard plywood sheet
- 2 6' 2x6s
- Fabric
- Buttons
- Foam
- brass finishing nails

The leftover bamboo table

Table for 1..dollar?
I acquired some leftover bamboo flooring and knew there had to be a use for such extra pieces. After a little planning I constructed a surround to insert the interlocking bamboo flooring into a functional table. Oddly enough I could not find 3×3 for legs.. so I had to make my own from 3×1 and planed and wood-glue. Then gave them a slight taper cut for aesthetics. Also optimized for disassembly – so it can stay with me for some time!
The breakfast nook

After that morning sun
There was some dead-space in the back of the east-facing side of the house, it would be nice to have storage and a little place to hang out while the sun in beaming in. So I built a little table and benches.
Storage wars!
Some place to keep things out of sight were a large part of this. You can see that I hide all of my beer-brewing equipment here.
